Personal Training · Coming back from injury

Train your bad knee, instead of around it.

Personal training in Southeast Portland for adults with a knee that's been holding them back. We go at the tissue underneath the problem and rebuild it, so you get a knee you can train, not one you protect.

Paul and the training programs he creates for me have greatly assisted me in building the stability in my body I need to return to activities I have been guarding against for fear of injury.

The usual advice is to work around it.

Skip the squats, avoid the lunges, stay off it and train everything else until it settles. It feels responsible. It’s also how a bad knee stays a bad knee for three years.

Working around a joint isn’t the same as fixing it. Rest calms the pain down, but it doesn’t rebuild the tissue that stopped doing its job. The moment you load the knee again, you’re back to where you were, because nothing underneath changed.

We find where the knee actually breaks down.

Is it the tissue on the inside of the joint that isn’t holding position. Is it the quad that shut off after the injury and never fully switched back on. Is it the ankle below it or the hip above it forcing the knee to absorb load it was never meant to carry. The knee is usually paying for a problem somewhere in the chain.

Then we load it directly, and build back up.

This is where the Internal Strength Model does its work. Instead of training the movement and hoping the joint copes, we name the tissue at that joint and load it directly, in a range it can handle right now. Small at first. Specific. You feel it in the exact place that needs it, not spread across a movement that lets the strong parts cover for the weak one.

Then we build back up. Tissue, then position, then load, in that order.

You don’t get a knee you have to protect forever. You get one you can train.

What coming back looks like here.

Common questions.

Can I train if my knee still bothers me?

Usually, yes. We find where the knee actually breaks down and load that tissue directly in a range it can handle right now, small and specific at first. We're not asking you to grind through pain. We're rebuilding the part that stopped doing its job.

Are you physical therapy?

No. We're a training studio, not a physical therapy or rehab clinic. If your knee needs clinical rehab or a doctor first, we'll tell you. Once you're cleared to train, this is where you get strong around it and stay that way.

How much does it cost?

Monthly, with no long contracts. Most members train two or three times a week, starting at $392 a month.

Thirty days. A knee you can train, not protect.
